Environmental engineering student Anna Kivimäki has completed her internship at EPSE under EPSE’s EHSQ Manager Anni Honkonen. The need for a new person arose in the spring 2022, when Honkonen was accepted to a master’s degree programme in safety engineering and management at the Tampere university.
The five-month long traineeship consisted of a variety of work tasks and Kivimäki feels that the experience has been very positive.
“It’s been really rewarding to be able to utilize my own strengths and take the amount of responsibility that I am comfortable with.”
Trainee job included e.g., diverse project work with national and international projects and internal development work such as improving technical documentation and updating the company’s websites. Kivimäki also familiarized with EPSE Laboratory operation following her own interests.
During the summer, Kivimäki chose a topic for her Bachelor’s thesis, which she will write for EPSE. The topic was chosen as Kivimäki was working on internal development tasks and noticed the need to improve technical documentation.
When choosing a thesis topic, students are free to draft a thesis proposal, which is then refined into a suitable thesis topic in cooperation with both parties. One thesis has previously been carried out for EPSE by Honkonen, and another thesis on cost accounting and project budgeting is currently in progress. Throughout the thesis process, the student is expected to be able to work independently, but a representative of EPSE will provide guidance, support, and material. If you are interested in thesis options related to EPSE’s field of expertise, we encourage you to contact us at EPSE!
The path to being a part of the EPSE Team was very natural for Kivimäki as the amount of responsibility increased in appropriate rate. “If someone had told me five months ago, I wouldn’t have believed that I would be in such great situation right now, doing work that I value with great co-workers!”
Next Kivimäki will remotely finish her studies in Savonia University of Applied Sciences while simultaneously working at EPSE as Project Engineer.
Savonia University of Applied Sciences is an organization with over 7000 students and 500 employees with campuses in three cities and the opportunity to study over 40 degree programmes. (savonia.fi) Whilst studying her bachelor’s degree of environmental engineering in Savonia UAS Kuopio campus, Kivimäki has specialized in water treatment technologies and environmental monitoring.
