Connections corner – Insights from EPSEs collaborators: Roving Ambassador for Central Asia

This week on Connections Corner, we are thrilled to introduce our Team Finland partner, His Excellency Mr. Ilkka Räisänen, a Finnish diplomat with an impressive career spanning decades. With a rich background in diplomacy and international relations, Ilkka brings wealth of experience to our collaborative efforts.

A remarkable diplomatic journey

Ilkka’s diplomatic journey has been nothing short of remarkable, having served in various capacities within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Finland and represented Finland across the globe, from Nairobi to Buenos Aires, Washington to Saint Petersburg. Ilkka has also served on the Board of the EBRD (European Bank for Reconstruction and Development) in London as Alternate Director. His most recent diplomatic endeavors have led him to the fascinating region of Central Asia, specifically Tadzhikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.

Exploring Central Asia

In our interview with Ilkka, we delved into the challenges and opportunities facing Finnish companies in Central Asia’s rapidly expanding environmental technology sector. He emphasized the hurdles of distance, resource allocation and finding suitable partners, while also highlighting the promising prospects in sectors such as water management, mining, and education.

Opportunities for Finnish companies

When asked for advice to Finnish companies venturing into the regions, Ilkka stressed the importance of meticulous preparation, building trust with local partners, and demonstrating patience. He also underscored the value of leveraging existing European networks and partnerships to navigate the complexities of these markets effectively.

Looking ahead

With Ilkka’s guidance and expertise, we are confident that our partnership will not only foster innovative solutions but also contribute to sustainable development and mutual growth in Central Asia. We are honored to collaborate with such a distinguished diplomat, and we look forward to the impactful strides we will make together in the realm of international cooperation and progress.
